BACKGROUND

Association of Grassroot Journalist Kenya (AGJK) is a non-profit making organization that brings together community media outlets and journalist across the country. AGJK was founded in 2015 and later registered with the government of Kenya in June 2017.

The organization works with sixty-one (61) community radio stations across the country and has a membership of more than 300 journalists. Members of AGJK maintain frequent contact with each other through social media platforms and often attend similar workshops, trainings and meetings.

AGJK believes in
localization of information through local community media.

Association of Grassroot Journalists Kenya seeks to strengthen the viability of community media in Kenya. It works in partnership with arrange of media outlets and communities to bring change through timely engagements.

Thematic Areas of Focus

a) Capacity Building

• To evaluate, monitor, supervise and fund journalists in producing relevant and objective content to be broadcasted in the communities • To enhance professionalism and to strengthen the capacity of the journalists to effectively and efficiently deliver objective content to the communities

c) Reconciliation and Peace

By broadening the communication and information dissemination away from the usual group of elite decision makers, to include public participation and talk back opportunities for grassroot journalists.

Gender based violence particularly against women, remains a major problem in Kenya and as journalists we believe we can provide community catalyst for further discussion/cultural and societal change and as well as much needed legal and support information.

To ensure the basic journalistic rights and freedom extend equally to our members and to give them a regional and global platform to network with other professional journalist worldwide.
